AN OVERVIEW OF LEAN AND SIX SIGMA

Lean Thinking and Six Sigma are improvement methodologies used by some of the most successful companies in the world over the past two decades for continual process improvement. Implemented properly, Lean and Six Sigma will work together to enable your company to continually make progress in eliminating or minimising waste and maximising growth capacity.

Sadly, most companies today miss the boat when it comes to these initiatives. Those most successful have operating systems and a strong culture of proactive improvement and growth, and these methodologies are simply tools for making that improvement and growth happen. Without appropriate systems and in a time compressed reactive culture, Lean and Six Sigma will always struggle to survive and will never realise the potential gains they can bring for you and your company.

Roots of Lean Thinking and Six Sigma

Meeting the needs of both the customer and the business are the central themes of any Lean Six Sigma implementation, with the ultimate outcome being growth in a company’s bottom line. Six Sigma originated at Motorola in the early 1980s. The application of Six Sigma principles at Motorola translated into billions of dollars in bottom line benefits and has since been a catalyst for most of the major organisations in the world today adopting it as their strategy for continual improvement.

The roots of Lean can be traced back to the 1950s to the work of a young Japanese engineer names Eiji Toyoda. Toyoda’s work on changing motor vehicle production techniques was the beginning of what became known as the Toyota Production System, and eventually Lean Production. Lean recognises that few processes are created to deliver customer defined value in the most time efficient way. In most cases, processes are created to maximise the quality of a product.
